Persian Traditional Group
Founded and directed by Esmail Fathi, this ensemble is dedicated to bringing traditional Iranian music to the stage. The talented group of musicians and vocalists performs with classical Iranian instruments such as the setar, tar, tonbak, daf, santur, oud, tanbur, violin, and more. In addition to the core ensemble, performances are occasionally enriched by Simurgh Music School's daf and tonbak students.
Arabic Traditional Group
This group specializes in traditional Arabic music, with a repertoire of nasheeds (Islamic devotional songs), as well as a selection of popular Arabic folk and classical tunes. The nasheed performances are led by seasoned Moroccan vocalist Abdelilah Rharrabti, the ensemble offers a refined and culturally rich musical experience showcasing instruments such as oud, riq, darbuka, daf, and saz. Over the past few years, the group has regularly performed at Eid events and other Islamic celebrations in Christchurch.
Afghan Traditional Group
This group is led by Navid Masher (harmonium, vocals) and Aryan Kausari (zerbaghali, tabla). Their repertoire features lively and energetic folk tunes from across Afghanistan, performed with authenticity and passion. The unmistakably Afghan rhythms are sure to get you clapping along, and maybe even up on your feet!
Qawwali Group
Qawwali is a form of Sufi devotional music from the Indian subcontinent. This group presents a unique fusion of Qawwali with instruments and influences from its roots in Persian and Punjabi folk musical traditions. Led by Waris Rajput—a seasoned Qawwali singer with extensive experience in Sufi devotional and Indian classical music—the ensemble combines powerful vocals with diverse regional sounds to create a rich, cross-cultural musical experience.
