Founded in 2022 in Christchurch, New Zealand, Simurgh Music Hub aims to inspire the learning and passion for traditional music instruments to people of all ages and backgrounds. The music hub specializes primarily in instruments from the Middle-East, as well as surrounding regions of the Mediterranean, Central Asia and India.
The Music Hub includes a percussion performance group, made up of Daf & Tonbak students and led by percussion tutor Esmail Fathi. Students can also learn a wide range of both traditional and modern string instruments from string tutor Liam Oliver including the Setar, Tar, Sitar, Rabab, and Guitar. The tutors and students are also available for performances, music workshops and presentations.
And there's more—aside from the Middle Eastern melodies, they also appreciate Qawali and Arabic music, broadening their musical horizons. Simurgh Music Hub is committed to sharing the joy of music, whether it's through learning, performing, or simply appreciating the rich cultural sounds they bring to Christchurch and beyond.
We welcome any talented musicians to join us and help enrich our musical products.
On March 15, 2024, New Zealand reflects on the fifth anniversary of the Christchurch Mosque attacks, prompting a global display of love and solidarity for its Muslim communities. Musicians from Christchurch's Simurgh Music Hub collaborate, performing a traditional Afghan song. Liam, on the saz, and Esmail, a vocalist and daf player, unite with Abdelilah Rharrabti, a survivor of a prior attack, in a moving tribute.
